[edit] About Telepathy: An Overview
The art of telepathy is the process by which two or more people can communicate through the mind not using any of the five other senses. The word was created in 1882 by Fredric W. H. Myers as a word to replace thought-transference. Whether telepathy is real or not seems to be a matter of opinion, although there are many cases where it seems that telepathy almost had to occur for certain events to happen. Especially between twins, telepathy seems to have strong evidence for existence. Still, it has never been proven and is not likely to either.
[edit] Telepathy in popular culture
Telepathy is a very common theme among popular culture. There are thousands of movies, books, games, and songs that talk about telepathy and its various forms. One of the reasons why telepathy is such a popular subject is the fact that it is something that ordinary people can't do. The main thing that fascinates people about telepathy is the fact that it just might be possible, but isn't quite. People really like the idea of being able to have the special skill of talking to someone over long distance through the mind, or being able to read someone else's thoughts.
In most of the stories about telepathy, the talent is either used for good or evil. Usually however, most of the characters that use telepathy are actually well-meaning. One of the coolest ideas about telepathy is the fact that it creates strong bonds between the people who can talk though the mind. It would be much easier to understand people if you could just read what they were thinking! Of course, many times the telepathy is used more like a sensor for being able to identify presences in an area. This is something that actually might be more realistic.
[edit] Forms of telepathy
One of the main sub-forms of telepathy is telekinesis. Telekinesis is the process of being able to move things with the mind. Some people claim that this is something that either they can do, or have seen other's do, but like telepathy, it is unproven universally. There are many references and jokes about this sub-form as well. Many people make jokes about it, such as "If you believe in telekinesis, raise my hand" and other such jokes. Most people probably don't believe in the existence of telepathy or any of its forms in reality, but it is always interesting and fun to think about how it would work.
Some other forms of telepathy are: Latent Telepathy and Precognitive Telepathy. These forms of telepathy deal with the idea that a telepathic thought can either appear in the future after someone transmits it, or appear in the future before the telepathic person transmits the information. These forms of telepathy seem highly unlikely, as someone could claim to have received a telepathic message at one point, and then later on someone else could say that they transmitted that idea or thought. Still, it is really impossible to know either way. It is best not to try and prove or disprove such theories, but rather just believe them or not.
