The practice of tea leaf reading, called tasseography, is a method of telling the future through patterns in tea leaves. Coffee grounds and wine sediments are also “read” in this way. It is one of the simplest methods of divination and has been practiced for years. The word tasseography originates from the French word “tasse” which means cup.

The future teller will have a look at the different shapes left by the tea leaves and can tell from those just what is going on with the questioner. These shapes, or symbols, represent different aspects of the question or questions asked, and are interpreted by the reader. There are so many of these symbols that only someone experienced in reading tea leaves will know them from memory. If you happen to be experimenting or just learning, you will probably want to keep a book or list of the symbols and their meanings close by.

While it is usually thought that the tea cup represents one month’s time, there are some future tellers who can see your whole life. This can be done only by very experienced readers. In keeping with this time frame, symbols appearing halfway will take place within 2 weeks. Going further down is 4 weeks, while the rim of the cup represents today. Symbols showing up just at the rim suggest something happening first thing in the morning. If there is any gathering in the bottom of the cup, this means problems coming up immediately.
