[edit] The Most Popular Haunted Ghost Stories

It is very hard to classify any ghost story as the best or most popular because the thrill they give while saying or hearing it is often unparalleled and difficult to compare. It is also a matter of personal liking and disliking when it comes to stories regarding haunted places, ghosts, scary haunted houses, and so on. If you run an impromptu random research to find out people's opinions, you would find that though most people would not vouch for the existence of ghosts, they do believe there is SOMETHING out there, and are not in a hurry to interact with them.

[edit] Ghost stories have always been popular and in demand

There are many, many popular haunted ghost stories written by world famous authors. The most popular of these have been immortalized through adaptation and pictures in the form of movies, such as The Poltergeist, The Exorcist, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, etc. Each of these movies became popular and famous mainly due to the sinister content of each of their stories.

You would wonder what makes haunted ghost stories so popular among the masses. Asked their opinion, some replied they felt good that in most cases, good always wins over evil. Yet, others say that ghost stories reinforce their belief in God since, if such evil exists, the opposite would definitely exist, too.

Though most of the haunted and scary stories (in print) are not accompanied with pictures, which allows your imagination to run wild, the movie adaptations are able to make vivid imprints in the minds of people, and encourage them to carry pictures of ghosts and scary haunted houses at the back of the mind for a very long time.

[edit] The most popular ghost stories are based on truth

Some stories (in fact, most of the haunted ghost stories) you read have their seed rooted in some extremely bizarre true-life experience. This is indeed what increases the popularity of the stories many times over. For example, The Urban Legend, the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and others, have the basic theme and background true. These stories become instantly popular because people like to see something that is not only a figment of the author's imagination, but reality put into a refined narrative form.

There is one more thing that you could understand and infer from the rising popularity of ghost stories. It seems that people love the thrill and adrenalin rush that comes with the thought that the story they are watching could happen to them, too. Getting scared is a type of high that is as addictive as any other high known to human beings.

Children today, too, would rather lie down with a ghost story book than the regular Archie's comics. If you run randomly through the most popular cartoon movies, you would see that these would be something that would have to do with ghosts, though in a more relaxed and humorous manner, such as Scooby Doo, Courgae the Cowardly Dog, etc.

[edit] Scary haunted houses and stories in reality shows are most popular today

A genre of ghost stories becoming increasingly popular today are realty shows involving world famous haunted places, such as homes, ships, desserts, orchards, etc. Each of these sightings and real life experiments would then be either telecast by re-enacting it; or have it filmed right at the sight. The high rating received from viewers from all over the world reinforce the belief that "nothing sells like sex or horror, or ghost movies".

The most popular ghost stories today are gradually changing in terms of thrills they represent. Those, which are based on true-life stories, are the most sought after, closely followed by the reality-type shows and narratives, and lastly the regular authored stuff.
