[edit] What is a Medium?
A Medium, in simple terms, is someone who has the ability to 'cross over' and communicate with people who have passed from this life. They have been blessed with a special gift that allows them to receive messages from the afterlife, and so many people who are bereaved after a loss of a loved one often seek Medium powers to get in contact with their lost loved one.
[edit] Why the name 'Medium'
Medium may seem like an odd name for someone with such an extraordinary gift, when in other literary meanings, the word medium refers to something that is in the middle, or otherwise average. Mediums are far from average, and are so named because they are act as an intermediary between two worlds - the physical world, and the spiritual world.
[edit] Dealing with an accurate psychic Medium
Many people, especially those who are not familiar with any sort of parapsychology, are skeptical about Medium powers. Many people consider Mediums to be frauds, and they think Mediums use tactics in order to get the information they need to seem like an accurate psychic Medium. Some research has been carried out that suggests Mediums do nothing but adopt tactics of stage magicians in order to appear as if they have Medium powers. However, accurate psychic Medium powers cannot be proved or disproved, and many people choose to invest their beliefs in the power of the medium.
[edit] Types of Medium
There are several different distinctions of the word Medium. A Medium can be either a physical Medium, or a mental Medium. A physical Medium is an extreme phenomena which is usually only demonstrated within a private group. During a physical mediumship, the spirits that the medium connects with are made physical through audible voices or materialised figures. A mental Medium is the most common, and this is where the connection between the Medium and the spirit takes place in the Medium's brain. Mental mediumship can come in three different forms: • Clairvoyance, where the Medium can see the spirit • Clairaudience, where the Medium can hear the spirit, and • Clairsentience, where the Medium can sense that the spirit is present, and sense its thoughts.
There is also trance mediumship, where the spirit is physically evoked by taking control of the Medium and appearing through their body.
[edit] The history of the Medium
Whilst the endeavor to communicate with spirits and the deceased has been going on for thousands of years, Mediumship did not appear in the mainstream until the mid nineteenth century. As Spiritualism became more popular in the United States, the Fox sisters emerged in the 1850s as the first Mediums. Since this time, the art of the Medium has remained a popular alternative practice throughout the western world. Although the Spiritualist church dropped the ritual of mediumship from its practices, many Mediums have appeared over the years, and many have reached celebrity status, such as John Edward, Colin Fry and Derek Acorah, all having their own television series to showcase their Medium powers.
