Snakes have always had a great deal of power in different cultures. The symbolism of the snake can be dated back to ancient times, and in the first book of the Christian bible. Below we will take a look at different ways snakes are symbolized, and what the different meanings of snakes are in your dreams.

[edit] Symbolism of snakes in different cultures and beliefs

  • Asian and Native American Cultures. The snake is known as a symbol of wisdom and that of knowledge of the earth
  • Christian Culture. The snake is seen as the sign of the presence of evil or temptation
  • East Indian Culture. The snake is known as the symbol for the release of blocked power as well as the sign for transformation
  • Freud tends to associate the snake with the phallus, and gives it sexual meaning
  • Jung describes the snake as the symbol of unresolved or unconscious fears

[edit] Meanings of snakes in our dreams

  • A snake directly in front of you may mean there is an unresolved issue, and you do not want to acknowledge it. This can also mean a conflict with a particular person or relationship at the present time.
  • Finding yourself caught between two snakes can mean that you are in the middle of two other significant people in your life who are at odds, and you do not want to take sides on the matter.
  • A snake biting you may mean that you are very afraid that the death or demise of a friend, loved one, or relationship is imminent.
  • Finding yourself surrounded by snakes can mean that you feel that everyone is against you at the present time. It can also symbolize that you are depressed or totally miserable in your life at the present time.
  • Another meaning is that you feel failure is imminent, your luck is bad or your business deals will fall through.
  • A snake in your bed may mean that you find yourself in an intimate relationship that is not satisfying you. It also comes after a relationship has broken up, and you have not accepted it. You would like the person to come back into your life but know it is not possible logically.
  • A snake ready to strike usually means that you have issues with those in authority. It can reveal that you are having issues with a supervisor or superior at work. This also comes into play when you have major issues with a parent or grandparent that you feel cannot be resolved easily.
  • Falling into a pit of snakes can mean that you are wondering into unknown territory in your life, and are really unsure of the outcome. This can mean a new job you are not sure about, or a major change in a personal relationship, such as your child gets married or goes off to college.
  • Wrestling with a snake or being squeezed by a large snake, such as a python, can mean that you are unsure of your own intelligence or your capabilities in a given situation.

As seen above, snakes can take on many different meanings in your dreams. The best way to find out which meaning pertains to you is to examine your life at the time of the dream took place. Write down any situation or relationship issue you might have, and then apply the meanings above. Snakes show fears in general, so take that into account when working out interpretation of your dreams.
