[edit] JOHN OF GOD, BRAZILIAN MIRACLE HEALER
John of God, a farmer by trade, was born in 1942. He is now known as a Brazilian Miracle Healer, or “John in Abadiana,” who is said to have healed millions of various diseases in a little cottage in the Brazil plateaus he calls “John of God Casa.” His real name is João Teixeira de Faria, but usually he is simply addressed as John of God Healer, or, John of God in Brazil. Although he has performed such allegedly amazing feats such as healing tumors, cancers, broken limbs, congenital maladies, lupus, pneumonia and other fatal diseases, he has no medical degree.
It all began when, according to many witnesses, at age sixteen, the ghost of King Solomon possessed his body, and gave him the instant ability to perform miraculous healings. For many years, João went around Brazil healing anyone with an illness. It was about 27 years ago that he stopped wandering and starting living permanently in the plateaus. This is when everyone started calling him “John of God.”
Currently, instead of just King Solomon, he now channels thirty three spirits, mostly physicians, at the Casa to help him heal his patients free of charge. He uses simple tools to do various operations, including a special personalized Crystal, simple scissors, needles, scalpels and incense. ABC News, as well as 60 Minutes, has done documentaries of “John of God Healer” or “John of God Abadiana.”
The debate of whether he is genuine or not, still continues. No one can quite decide if he really is a faith healer because, just as there are many skeptics, there are just as many testimonials of healings. Skeptics have been very strong to point out that John of God Abadiana never fails to place his hands on female patients’ breasts regardless of what their ailment is. They also show that the herbs sold in his Casa amount to not less than $400,000 per year.
However, it cannot be denied that many have indeed been somewhat if not fully healed. Matthew Ireland, for instance, of Guilford, Vermont, had an inoperable fast growing brain tumor and had already gone through two years of chemotherapy and radiation. He finally decided to take a leap of faith and made three visits to John of God Abadiana for his healing in the Casa in Brazil. The MRI testing following these sessions did show that the cancer had shrunk by fifty percent. However, it was not gone, as the entity channeled by John of God at that moment, claimed. Matthew Ireland’s doctors attribute the tumor shrinking to the modern aggressive radiation treatment they had insisted on and do claim that it is possible that the specific type of tumor may have been misdiagnosed. So, his credibility is our best guess.
Needless to say, he is not the same John, which the church, John of God San Francisco, is named for. Even he, himself, claims that he does not heal. Frequently, he is heard by his millions of patients to say: “John of God Abadaiana heals no one. God heals.”
