Feng shui started thousands of years ago in ancient China. The original purpose of feng shui was to bring together the two worlds of heaven and earth. The original feng shui practices were more used for the placement of buildings and burial grounds. However, with the modern addition of so many more things, the feng shui principles can be applied in a much more localized manner. In fact, since people now live much more cluttered lives, feng shui living is even more important than ever for proper Qi flow.

[edit] Importance of color for feng shui info

The traditional feng shui living aspects tie colors into the five elements. Colors for the north and water are shades of blue and black. Colors for west/northwest relate to metal and are grey and white. Colors for the south relate to fire, and are shades of red and orange. Colors for the northeast/southwest relate to earth, and are shades of gold and other earth tones. The east/southeast element is wood, and its color is green. What this feng shui info means is that when choosing a color for your home or other building, is that it is important to realize what compass points your walls are facing for proper harmony of color.

There are other ways to incorporate color using feng shui as well. This other way is the realization that colors have an impact on the mind. This has been scientifically proven, both with animals and people. Certain colors are mood boosters whether for good moods or bad. What this means for feng shui living is just to realize that colors can have a high impact on the mind, and to paint accordingly. Blue tones in the house usually convey authority and peace, but too much blue can cause depressive feelings. Red is traditionally the color of high emotions, evoking love or passion, but too much red can trigger thoughts of anger or frustration. Yellow tones usually convey cheerfulness and lightheartedness, which is why this color is often seen in children's rooms or classrooms. However, too much yellow can cause confusion. Purple is the color of royalty or power, but is not a good color to place in living areas where conversations take place because people will stop talking. However, it can also be associated with shock. Green is the color of new life and growth, but too much green can seem like there is no direction in life.

[edit] Mistakes to avoid when using fung shui color techniques

One thing to watch out for when using feng shui color techniques is that colors represent different things to each culture. One example is the color white. In western cultures, the color white represents purity and newness, however, in eastern cultures, it represents death and blankness. That is a big distinction that should be considered in spaces that are going to be used multi-culturally, like in airports.

Another important thing to avoid is the overabundance of one element in a space. For homes, it is best to create a good balance of all five of the elements so that the occupants can feel well balanced. If there is a lot of wood in your home, then nothing else relating to the element of wood should be used, and colors should stay away from green tones in their decorating. The same thing goes for all other elements.
