Have you ever wondered about ESP, or if you possess this gift or not? If so please read on, as this article will explain what ESP is, and the different types of abilities that it encompasses.

ESP, or extra sensory perception, is defined as the ability to sense things via paranormal means. This information can be gleaned from persons, places or things. Using your sixth sense or intuition are other terms that a lot of people use for this phenomena. Parapsychology is the study of all things paranormal, and includes the study of extra sensory perception. There have been many studies on this subject, as well as documentation of several different forms of ESP is well established.

Following are the different types, or aspects, of psychic phenomena that are attributed to extra sensory perception and their meanings:

  • [[Precognition] is the ability to “see” things before they happen. Included in this category are clairvoyance, clairaudience, and clairsentience.
  • Telepathy is the ability to transfer thoughts or feelings from one person to another or the ability of one person to sense another’s thoughts or feelings.
  • Psychokinesis, or telekinesis as it is more widely referred to, is the ability to manipulate matter or energy in a way that does not concur within the laws of physics. This is the ability to move objects with the mind.
  • Pyrokinesis is the ability to start or manipulate fires with the mind.
  • Remote viewing is the ability to glean information from objects or persons that cannot be seen with the human eye.
  • Out of body experiences are journeys where the spirit leaves the body and walks the astral plane for knowledge or information from other spirits.
  • Mediumship is the ability to see and talk to the dead.

[edit] Parapsychology and studies of ESP

  • In 1882 The Society of Psychical Research was founded in England and started studying telepathy, hypnotism and spiritualism.
  • 1911 Stanford University was the first US university to study ESP and psychokinesis in a laboratory setting.
  • 1930 Duke University started the second major academic study of the paranormal and ESP in the US.
  • 1957 The Parapsychological Association was founded in North Carolina which continues studies today.
  • 1970’s parapsychology gained a lot of interest. Studies of the phenomena were conducted all over the US including studies at UCLA and in Europe as well.

Present day scientists continue to study parapsychology, and continue to work on ways to document that ESP, and other facets of the paranormal, do exist.

There is irrefutable evidence that things such as haunting and other phenomena do occur, but cannot be seen with the naked eye. Those who study haunting and ghosts now have equipment and can document cold spots, catch pictures of orbs or shadows present, and record EVP’s or ghostly voices in areas that are reported to be haunted.

ESP, and parapsychology, have gained respect in communities now that it never has before. Police and the FBI use psychics and mediums in order to help find new evidence in missing persons’ cases and in cold cases as well.

As we are reported to only use approximately 10% of our brains, the study of ESP will continue and we will strive to learn more about these abilities. Hopefully, it will lead us to be able to develop abilities that we do not have at the present time. The possibilities are endless in this area.
