[edit] What is a Dream Dictionary?
A dream dictionary is a tool available both offline and online which associates the symbols that appear in dreams with a real life situation which has occurred in the past or is about to appear in the future of the dreamer. Dream dictionaries simplify the process of interpreting dreams by giving meaningful insights into the knowledge that a person has on a subconscious level.
[edit] What is the origin of a dream dictionary?
Records of interpretations of dreams have existed since the Roman Civilization and have even been mentioned in the bible. Dream symbols logically arranged in the form of a lexicon was the product of the Charismatic Movement in modern churches. The Charismatic Movement was inspired by the writings of John Fletcher and largely held by the members of the Pentecostal Church. Followers of the movement believe in the many manifestations of the Holy Spirit such as miracles and supernatural healing. Popular Judeo Christian dream dictionaries are:
- The Prophet’s Dictionary by Paula. A. Price
- Understanding Your dreams by Ira Milligan
- Illustrated Bible based Dictionary of Dream Symbols by Joe Iboje.
- Dictionary of Biblical Imagery by Leland Ryken
- Figures of Speech Used in the Bible by E.W. Bullinger.

[edit] Are online dream dictionaries authentic?
Expert dream interpreters and psychologists are skeptical about using online dream dictionaries because anyone can upload any information on the Internet. Books purchased in bookstores and on online bookstores undergo rigorous publishing checks. Online bookstores have customer ratings about the books they feature which serve as a guideline for the purchaser.
[edit] Are dream dictionaries useful?
There are two schools of dream interpretation-
- The, ‘use dream dictionaries’ and
- The, ‘never use dream Dictionaries.’
The, ‘use dream dictionary’, school finds value in the privacy of dream interpretation using a dream dictionary. The dream dictionary can be a handy ready reckoner which gives the dreamer a flavor of why he or she dreamed a particular dream about a particular symbol. If the dreamer is constantly bombarded with dreams containing a certain symbol the dreamer can at least scratch the surface of its meaning by using a dream dictionary.
The, ‘never use dream dictionary’ school believes that a dream dictionary should only be used for entertainment and not for serious dream interpretation. This is because every dream is unique, and meanings of symbols are so broad based that they cannot be used for specific interpretation.
[edit] Conclusion
A dream dictionary can only serve as one of the many components of dream interpretation. The symbols presented by dream dictionaries serve to throw a ray of light on the process of awakening one’s dreams.
