Black cat superstitions
From DiscoverPsychic
Through the centuries, black cat superstitions have existed all over the world. They have been both worshipped and dreaded, depending on the area and the people. There are several versions making this one of the more common superstitions.
[edit] Black cats and the Egyptians
In ancient Egypt, the cat was highly regarded to the point of being worshipped. It was forbidden to kill a cat, and was a capital crime to do so. Egyptians thought so highly of their cats that when one died, it was mummified. The family entered a time of mourning for the cat. It was considered a member of the family, as well as godlike.
[edit] The end of high regard
Around the 17th century, the cats started to be known as a part of Witchcraft. As the witch hunters scouted out “witches,” the cats suffered as well. Their particular brand of luck went from good to bad in many areas of the world. For awhile, it was a popular event to burn cats and other animals on Shrove Tuesday. This was believed to protect homes from fire and other disasters.
