America's Scariest Haunted Houses
From DiscoverPsychic
For those who love haunted ghost stories, here is a list of scary haunted houses in the United States. These are considered by many to be among the scariest anyone could ever venture to visit.
[edit] The Whaley House
The Whaley House was built in 1857 by Thomas Whaley in San Diego, California. The Whaley family lived on the property for almost a century. It is in this house where dozens of ghost sightings have been reported.
The house was built on property that was once partly a cemetery. It has been home to courthouse documents, a granary and even a theater group. There are a couple deaths on the property of people who tourists claim to have seen today as ghostly images. A young girl was accidentally hanged, and a thief by the name of Jim Robinson was clubbed to death on the stairway of the home.

[edit] The Winchester House
Sarah Winchester was a wealthy widow by means of being the Winchester Rifle Heiress. After her husband and daughter died, Sarah was told by a medium that the constant building of a house would make the dead killed by her family's rifle happy and, therefore, she would be granted eternal life. She began building in 1884 and continued for 38 years straight until her death at 82 years of age.
The house itself is strangely built. It has 160 rooms and 47 fireplaces, but that is not what makes it strange. There are architectural designs such as staircases that lead to nowhere and doors that open up into walls. It is here that an enormous amount of ghost sighting claims have originated.

[edit] The Villisca Axe Murder House
Located in Villisca, Iowa, a house was the setting for a mass murder of the entire Moore family plus their two house guests on June 10, 1912. The murders were never solved, though there were plenty of suspects. A reward was put out for information leading to the arrest of the criminal, but instead, when no one was reported, the money was used to purchase gravestones for the family.
Many people believe the house is haunted with the members of the dead family, their guests, and even the killer himself. This is not totally unbelievable. Enough stories from individuals, mediums, professional ghost hunters and groups taking tours have surfaced for this house to make the list as one of the scary haunted houses.
In 1994, the house was purchased by Darwin and Martha Linn who restored it to its original 1912 condition, including furniture placement at the time the murders took place. Because of its historical significance, the house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places list in 1998. Many people come to ghost hunt and spend the night.
